BullBuilder Annual Awards 2018 Report

The Academic Outstanding Achievement Award was awarded to U19 hooker Lochlan McGill who recently passed his BTEC in Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE). Lochlan, who comes from the Stanningley Community Club and is sponsored by The Top House has recently signed a new 1 year contract that will see him through until the end of 2019. Head of Youth John Bastian said “Lochlan isn’t natural academic but has worked tremen-dously hard and shown great effort and commitment to get his qualification, we’re all very proud of him. BullBuilder chairman Paul Butterworth said “It’s great to see the young players succeeding with their studies and Lochlan’s achievement shows you can combine excellence both on and off the field.” The U16’s Player of the Year Award was won by Kieron Brining who is sponsored by John Summers Butchers. Kieron, who comes from the West Bowling Community Club, is a cen-tre or winger who has excelled this season. John Bastian said: “Kieron has done very well this season and this award was a very close call between him and his teammate Harry Shackleton who’s skill created a lot of opportuni-ties for Kieron to use his pace and power. Both Kieron and Harry have gone onto gain se-lection for the England youth team which shows you how highly they’re rated. Kieron played very well in the games in France against the national side and Catalans U17’s. They’re both excellent young players and the only way they’ll not succeed in the future is if they choose not to.” The U19’s Player of the Year Award was won by Matthew Storton. Matthew, a backrow forward from West Bowling, is sponsored by Jennifer Bennison. He was BullBuilder player of the month in June and has recently gone on to break into the first team scoring his first try versus West Wales. John Bastian said: “Matthew has shown real resilience to recover from some serious injuries to his shoulder and hamstring. He’s worked incredibly hard and shown real patience. His progression hasn’t been easy yet he’s shown real toughness and is now reaping the reward. With a tough pre-season under his belt I think you’ll see him get even better in 2019. The Paul Fisher Outstanding Achievement Award was given to U19’s coach Leigh Beattie. Leigh who has stood in as first team coach in the past has guided the U19’s to a 6th place finish in the league. John Bastian said “Leigh fully deserves this award. He’s been a stalwart at the club, including during the tough times. This season the U19’s have been competitive all year and Leigh has worked very hard to develop the team. I think he has a lot more to come too as a coach.” The final award of the evening was the recognition of 20 years of service (that included out-standing dedication and support given to youth development at the Bulls), this was presented to Football Manager Stuart Duffy. Stuart arrived at the club in 1998 and helped oversee the club’s most successful period. John Bastian said “Stuart has shown great loyalty to remain with the Bulls for two decades and I was pleased to see that recognised by BullBuilder.” On Wednesday 14th November BullBuilder will be hosting a race night. This will take place in the Southbank at Odsal with tickets available for purchase from the Club shop. Tickets will be £5 and include a pie and pea supper. U19s Player of Month July 2018 and Event News

BullBuilder is pleased to announce the winner of the U19s player of the month for July. The July award goes to fullback Alix Stephenson.   Alix, who comes from Bradford and the Queensbury community club is pacey fullback who has made his mark in the U19s and reserves this season. Head of Youth John Bastian said “Alix has a lot of facets to his game. He’s good at organising the defence and poses an attacking threat on the edges and up the middle.  Fullback is a pivotal position and he has improved his game and got a lot smarter in the 12 months he’s been with us.    He’s now starting to see the bigger picture and his challenge now is to put in consistent performances across all areas of his game on a week by week basis.” “I’m very pleased for Alix that he’s won this award, it’s well deserved and there’s a lot more to come from him.    He’ll learn a lot from Gregg McNally and Brandon Pickersgill and he’ll provide healthy competition for them next season.” BullBuilder chairman Paul Butterworth said “It’s great to see yet another Bradford lad win the player of the month award.  Alix has been very impressive at fullback this season.” Alix’s performances have come as the U19s have built some momentum against the top academy sides recently.  John Bastian said “We had been building nicely before the home victory over Leeds Rhinos where we got a well deserved win and put in a pleasing performance.  We had a tough away fixture at St Helens where we lost narrowly but looking back on that I think we can improve in a number of areas.   The next game against Wigan will provide another stern test.  After that are three more games against Huddersfield, City of Hull and Catalans.  I’d urge supporters to come and get behind the team.” Alix will receive his award at pitchside at half time during the match versus Workington on 19th August.   Alix is sponsored by Horne Surveyors.   He will receive his award from BullBuilder board member Toni Hoggett. On 11 September BullBuilder will be hosting the U16's and U19's Player of the Year Awards, the Paul Fisher Outstanding Achievement Award and Academic Achievements Award evening.  This will take place in the Southbank at Odsal with tickets available for purchase from the Club shop soon.  Tickets will be £5 and include a pie and pea supper.  More details will follow soon. BullBuilder Hit Peak Performance

Volunteers from BullBuilder staged their biggest challenge yet when 14 of them tackled the three Yorkshire peaks last Saturday.  The team, made up of BullBuilder members, volunteers, parents and club staff, completed the 24.5 mile trek the majority doing it in under 12 hours, despite soaring temperatures.   Sponsorship in excess of £2000 was raised to help youth development at Bradford Bulls. BullBuilder committee member Toni Hoggett said “I’d like to thank everyone that took part in this challenge.  From a personal point of view I can safely say it was physically, mentally and emotionally the hardest thing I have ever done.  I’d also like to thank everyone that donated.” BullBuilder Head of Youth John Bastian, who also completed the challenge said, “I’d like to give huge thanks to Toni Hoggett for organising the walk.   I don’t think people realise the effort it takes not only to complete it but also to organise it.   I’d like to compliment everyone that took part, particularly the women who prepared so thoroughly and took on the challenge with enthusiasm and good humour.     I’d also like to commend BullBuilder chairman Paul Butterworth who completed the challenge despite suffering from a dislocated shoulder.  What an effort!   The funds raised will be spent carefully and go toward youth development at Bradford Bulls.” BullBuilder chairman Paul Butterworth said:  “I’d like to specifically thank Toni Hoggett, Mark Steel, Kelly Hargreaves, Paul Kilner, Sam Grundy, Liz Hallett, Sarah Davey, John Bastian, Liz Keyes, Simone Ryan, Ann Mucha, Andy Stephenson and Tony Hoggett for their superhuman efforts.   I’d also like to thank Becky Stephenson, Karen Sowden and Jason Taylor for providing support along the route without which this wouldn’t have been possible.  Finally I’d like to thank all those that sponsored us, your support is invaluable and ensures the club is able to keep producing the junior talent it needs to move forward.” As well as completing this challenge BullBuilder will be out walking again at the weekend when they join forces with several Bradford Rugby League Community Clubs on a sponsored walk.  The walk will see them start at the Bulls training ground at Tong before taking in Dudley Hill, West Bowling, Wibsey, Wyke and Odsal Sedburgh before finishing at Odsal – a total of 9.5 miles.   All clubs are taking part as well as Keighley Albion along with Bulls junior players and Head of Youth John Bastian – a glutton for punishment after completing the 3 Peaks a week earlier. Sponsorship money raised by Community Clubs will go to their own club, supporting continued development of rugby league in the community.  Sponsorship money raised by the Academy and Scholarship teams will go to BullBuilder to enable them to continue their support of activities at Tong and the academy teams.  For details on how to get involved or sponsor contact sue.cator@bullsfoundation.org

BullBuilder is pleased to announce the winner of the U19s player of the month for June. Head of Youth John Bastian said “Matthew is really hardworking and consistent in everything he does.  He’s had a couple of tough injuries and come through the other side and is a very bright prospect.  What’s shone out this season is his attitude.  He’s an enthusiastic trainer who always arrives early and plays with a high level of commitment.   Over the past six months he’s worked on his defence and he also now runs the ball in not only with great power but also with great speed and runs good lines. “In games he’s always near the top of the statistics for quality and his performances are of consistent high quality.  If he keeps developing as he is he will be ready for first team action when John Kear calls upon him.” BullBuilder chairman Paul Butterworth said “It’s pleasing to see another Bradford lad win the player of the month award and follow in the footsteps of some big names.  He’s had a great season so far.” Matthew will receive his award in the Southbank pre York match on 22nd July.   Matty will receive this from his sponsor Jen Bennison.
